In recent years, the role of social networking sites on the internet has become more than just a place for friends to connect. Today, social networking sites are their own societies attracting individuals from all over the world and allowing individuals to connect on their own terms. Today, there are millions of individuals from numerous countries that use social networking sites on a daily basis for various needs.

Social networking sites were originally intended to be a place where individuals could connect with other individuals on the internet. These sites allowed individuals to put up detailed profiles about themselves and their interests and connected them with other like minded individuals from other areas of the world. Individuals that lived in small towns suddenly found themselves able to make friends with thousands of people from across the nation and even over seas.

As the popularity of social networking sites continued to grow, individuals began to use the sites for other things. These sites became important dating tools for individuals that were either too new to the area to know where to meet individuals of the opposite sex or individuals that were too shy in large social situations to make their interests known. By using the social networking site, individuals could get to know each other before meeting for the first time and could selectively weed out the individuals that they deemed unsuitable prior to a face to face meeting.

The role of social networking sites evolved to include a great deal of career networking as well. Many individuals found that using the social networking sites were a good way to make themselves and their abilities known to a wide range of individuals across the nation. Many local artists found themselves exposed to a much wider audience than they would have been able to accomplish in their home towns and found themselves being offered lucrative deals by individuals that they may have never met without the help of the social networking site.

Individuals with products or services to sell have also found themselves much more popular on the social networking sites than the traditional methods of selling door to door or depending on friends and family members for business references. Many individuals have turned their hobbies into lucrative businesses due to the response they received on their social networking site for their products. Not everyone that has a good idea will get a good response from the individuals on the social networking site, but it is a good sounding board to see how your product or services would appeal to the general public.

Although there have been some horror stories in recent years about how some individuals have chosen to use these social networking sites, for the most part, the individuals that use these sites are responsible, sane individuals. The program is only as good as the individuals that use them and it would be a shame if this great new advancement in social interaction was censored because of a few bad apples in the bunch. Many social networking sites are taking steps to eliminate the individuals that are using the sites improperly and the role of social networking will continue to evolve for many years to come.
